In the movie PROOF OF LIFE with Russell Crowe the city on the other side of the Andes mountains and the jungle where the pipe line is, is Quito, Ecuador. It looks just like you see it in the movie as does the Virgin of Quito statue you see in the background of my photo. Quito is on the west side of the Andes mountains of the nation of Ecuador and Lago Agrio is an old agricultural community now oil also on the east side of the Ecuador Andes that sits in the low amazon on the far south side of the Putamayo River basin. An oil pipe line follows a road up and over the east slope of the Andes or the road follows the pipe line. A few dirt roads lead off of it but only a few and pipes feed into it. This is a very uninhabited place with only a few small farms and ranches using the pipe line clearing. One community populated mainly by shaur and jivaro. Towards the top is a major oil company pumping station shining with stainless steel. To view from commercial passenger airliners passing overhead, as no one lives there. This is the finest place on earth. It may be the last..............The city of Quito is in real as beautiful as the reader is seeing it. Watch out for pickpockets. It is a pastime on the subway. My purpose of being in Quito was to research osteoporosis in the countryside. There remain in Ecuador rural areas with rich bounties of varied food where chemical additives have not been introduced into the food. These areas have no osteoporosis. The bones are not dense in these areas but lighter than in the United States and Quito and stronger than our bones in the United States and Quito. Lighter bones in rural Ecuador mean stronger bones. Greater bone density we judge as healthier are not healthier and the density is in real excessive caused by additives to our foods - chemicals, vitamins and minerals. When United States bones become light they are unhealthy. But Ecuador rural bones do not become lighter and are always lighter and stronger. We are thus looking in the United States at unhealthiness from our medical practice of fortifying foods when we need only a balanced diet with good education, free of fortification of food.                                                          I did not however get to my study in Osteoporosis as I needed first the use of the National Biblioteca in Quito. It was not available however with the steel draw down door from above drawn down to a level one had to duck under and people said it was closed. When I arrived I learned the National Library in Quito on the second floor was undergoing redecoration and the load down tube was coming out of the upstairs and loading into a truck. I was told it would only be a week before completion but then two days after I arrived was the presidential election and tube and truck disappeared without redecoration accomplished and things in disarray, to refurbish government offices. Looking for something else to do I ended up taking a bus from Quito down over the east side of the Andes through PROOF OF LIFE ALLEY to the low Amazon basin at Lago Agrio. If one does not wish to take the bus commercial airliners every other hour arrive at the Lago Agrio airport center of the petrol amazon. Although it is not a big community. A fiteeen minute walk from the center in any direction reaches the rural areas. The study of malaria medicines available in Lago Agrio farmacies (only one, Fansidar 2007) was a humble study. I spent one week in Lago Agrio. The soil is not exceptional. Lago Agrio is a nature filled in lake that had rich agricultural potential. Usually, by April the malaria season is at an end with mosquito population dwindling. The less you get bit the less chance of catching malaria. Usually a case of malaria is not dangerous and this includes Falciparum. There is Falciparum. I have been in the amazon basin many times and bit a lot but never caught malaria. Malaria here had at one time been like it is in Africa but the Falciparum medicine brings it to a non dangerous level. Falciparum is very cheap - about $3.00 per month per person during the malaria season. Following the season a person will want to give his or her body a rest from the medicine until the season comes again the next year. The income in Lago Agrio is high enough to make the Falciparum affordable.
