This is the enjoyable story by J Craig Wheeler whos father a western barn silo builder helped build Ivy Mike on the spot in the very early 1950's, order of president Harry Truman to show the Russians a thing or two who in turn showed the U.S. a thing or two by building a 100 megaton bomb that their are rumors about tore a hole in the earths upper atmosphere letting earth air out before the gap closed in. The South Pacific atoll group was sad on the last days before Ivy Mike was set off as they knew there would never be another barn silo Ivy Mike containing 1,000 liters of cryogenic H2 (frozen to liquid heavy hydrogen ) with a hollow 30 foot vertical plutonium pu239 or uranium u235 pipe in the center of the 1,000 liters of H2 contained in the giant glass flask, the hollow plutonium pipe containing trace amounts of H3. And never again a huge case of depleted uranium or natural uranium unenriched u238 holding the giant glass flask of 1,000 liters of H2 directly below the oppenheimer bomb of pu239 or u235 atop the silo, core compressed by PTEN-SEMEX into explosion and with a polonium-berrylium marble at the center of the pu239 or u235 core to increase fission value by 500 percent. And the oppenheimer bomb itself with a heavy depleted uranium or natural uranium 238 tamper casing the plutonium or uranium weapons grade core to hold in the explosion for maximum fission and with the u238 depleted uranium tamper with the very minute amounts of u235 in the depleted uranium u238 still enough when the oppenheimer bomb exploded to provide itself tamper extra fission punch of 3kt to the 17kt of the weapons grade core itself = 20,000kt (this how 20kt was gained over Nagasaki). The silo was of one inch thick steel lead lined on the inside to soak in hot xrays of the oppenheimer trigger bomb atop the silo that shot down through channels inside of the one inch steel casing the lead acting a a differential to move more force against the depleted uranium casing inside which held the 1,000 liters of H2 and in the center of the liquid hydrogen the 30 foot vertical plutonium hollow pipe reaching up nearly to the oppenheimer bomb atop the silo. The same as happened in the tamper of FAT MAN over Nagasaki the minute amount of u235 in this five ton Ivy Mike u238 casing fissioned inwardly against the 1,000 liters of cryogenic H2 and the plutonium pipe in center which in turn fissioned bringing the H2 to center of sun heat. And when center of sun heat is reached u238 ordinarily inert uranium fissions the same as u235. As the u238 was massive in quantity of five tons the result was a ten megaton explosion plus the explosive value of the H2 plus the trigger Oppenheimer bomb atop the silo fission value. Most of the fission value was ordinarily intert u238 the same as the u238 we left hundreds of tons of in Iraq and Afthanistan. The south pacific island the bomb sat on was erased. And not to say the day they triggered the openheimer bomb atop the silo the crew was twenty miles distant leaving hours early that morning. It was sad however as this behemoth bomb everybody was fond of was outmoded before it was exploded. Already the 1,000 liters of Hydrogen H2 was in replacement by no more than common heavy hydrogen addition to Lithium 6 to form a solid or those other isotopes of Lithium used in lithium axel grease. No more than a casing of axel grease would hold. Which lithium 6 deuteride is still used today in thermonuclear warheads. How totally vulgar and how common. But that was the case. However Ivy Mike worked producing 10 megatons of fission TNT force and president Truman happy the Russians could now see the U.S. more clearly. How would they like one of those coming into Vladisvostock harbor on a U.S. submarine. The Russians did not think they would and produced a thermonuclear weapon ten times as big. And then after a few more tests these big bombs ended because they would soon end us all for the more economical and practical million megaton thermonuclear bomb and much smaller ones as tactical thermonuclear bombs tactical that could do the job economically. J Craig Wheeler is who named the charge of his father the robot dewar "sleet sue". These dewars would come from another south sea island 70 miles distant loaded with cryogenic H2 which was pumped into the silo to keep it full with a hydrogen flame belching all hours from the silo as it lost H2. There were a number of these dewars arriving weekly at the bomb site to refill but as it happens it was "sleet sue" who J Craig Wheeler had personally named who was left on the island the morning the crew left and it was vaporized. Perhaps other dewars still exist for the museums but not "sleet sue". Ivy Mike was a very primative device and any Boces + Jr. college can easily build Ivy Mike with the money + Oppenheimer trigger bomb + plutonium pipe.
