I am behind the times being I am looking for cheap coffee finca land to invest $75,000.00 in in Honduras where persons retiring from other nations have not driven land sky high because of the Guatemala modern conveniences in the Antigua Guatemala area at least, a few miles distant relatively from Guatemala City. I just November 3rd came across the proposed divorce late Spring 2011 in a British tabloid. And it took place. They are now divorced with Sandra Casanova filing following the divorce to run for the Guatemala presidency this year 2011 and the Guatemala high court negating that run. A wife of a president although divorced is to close a relationship by Guatemala law to run herself for the presidency. Thus now Alvaro Colom and Sandra Torres Casanova Colom are not man and wife and neither will she be running for the presidency of Guatemala. I was in Antigua Guatemala in December 2011 taking an intermediate Spanish lesson when in the evening in a well known Guatemala Chinese restaurant five gunmen entered the restaurant shooting and killing a friend of Rolando Torres Casanova brother of Sandra and shot Rolando Torres Casanova twice putting him into surgery which was successful. They were celebrating a birthday. It seems Sandra Torres Casanova wants Guatemala to modernize more rapidly and have more liberal ways. Some people say she spends money rapidly and without logic. The common complaint she would run Guatemala into bankruptcy.

In 1993 when the war was at its peak I was in Guatemala for a basic Spanish lesson in Antigua, Guatemala, crossing into Guatemala on the Pacific Ocean side near Tapachula, Mexico. I used local busses and about 15 miles inside Guatemala the bus stopped at a heavy militarized point and all were asked to deboard. We all walked along a path a half mile in the country side and our bus had meanwhile pulled around to the other side for us to aboard it. During the half mile walk some men were pulled out of the line. I do not know the disposition. There was shooting over in the woods. But it sounded like soldiers simply trying out their guns. One person remarked "a show perhaps". A show is how the Government of Guatemala at the beginning avoided a take over by the revolutionarie forces. On that fatefull day Government forces were far outnumbered and the revolutionaries had the win potential. But the Guatemala Government put on an Orson Wells radio production of a Martian landing type but not Martians Guatemala forces and the revolutionary forces withdrew to the mountains not realizing they had tactically won. The war then continued many years until the revolutionary el caudillo became sick which was not long after 1993 and Dr Carpio the president of Guatemala negotiated an end to the war.
