(October 2007) Since I was in Honduras late 1998 through early 1999 rates
of HIV are reported to be at a level four times (400%) higher than in the United States and Latin America in
general, Latin America in general which has the same HIV rates as the United States (leaving out the nation of Belitz
the statistics show Honduras has the highest rate of HIV in the Americas, and Mexico the lowest, with HIV infecting approximately
two people per 100 in Honduras and one person per four hundred in Mexico, while in such nations as the United States,
Argentina, Peru and Brazil it is one person per 200 HIV infected). When I was in Honduras I read the figures
coming in from the more rural communities and areas and they do not support these current statistics. In fact the rural rates were
not as high as the United States HIV rate per 100 figures and most of the population of Honduras is rural. It is a rural nation.
And some of the Honduras statistics today state that the rural countryside has higher HIV rates than the Honduras cities,
double the amount. That is perplexing. Mathmatically the rate of HIV infection in any nation in the world unless it is artificially
induced can not get much higher than 2%. Some Africa nations say they have 30% HIV infection in their adult population
but it is to get medical grant money and medicines. In none of those nations does the HIV rate exceed much 2%. Thus Honduras
is at the far outer limits in HIV infection year 2007. As to what could cause this outer limits phenomena in the nation
once the lowest HIV rate nation in the Americas the best possibility is HIV rate destabilization by marriage at
a later age and lack of doctors and medicines to treat and cure common venereal disease. The homosexual anal route
is not defended by God and nature against HIV invasion but the healthy vaginal heterosexual route is near perfectly defended
atgainst HIV invasion. Thus condoms serve no purpose other than birth control when heterosexual health is good. Heterosexual
sex is erotic with touch and touch near unconcious of vaginal fluid and semen so one partner if he or she has HIV or some
common venereal disease ends up smoting the other with it condom or no condom. Heterosexuals must get venerial sores and tissue
debilities medically healed and that will insure agains HIV invasion of the body and seroconversion to HIV+ near
perfectly. As these are the routes HIV uses to invade. Other than these venereal debilities HIV can only invade the anal route,
or the body in general from an HIV infected needle from drug sharing use or HIV from a blood tranfusion or some
other artificial injection directly into the body. Reiterating if a person is an erotic heterosexual the condom
will not help that much. Young Mexican women prostitutes along the border of Mexico with Guatemala seldom use condoms
yet their rate of HIV is much less than the rate of HIV in the ordinary Honduras population. Prostitutes in that
area of Mexico do not have sex untill they get common venereal diseases healed and Mexico has many doctors for the
size of it's population and good medicine and know how. The situation is better than in the United States. I was
in Tegucigalpa in early 1999 when the HIV rates were coming in from the rural communities and areas (which comprises
85% of Honduras) and the rates were lower than the United States overall. That reiterating was 1999 and it could have been
the particular rural areas on HIV rates I saw coming in were not representative and thus my perception was skewed. One skewness possibility was that the HIV rates being submitted were from the more prosperous Honduras agricultural
communities where the state of Medicine is at a higher level and there was medicine and doctors available to cure common venereal
sores and tissue debilities which are the route HIV needs to invade the body. The rural communities were however
supposed to be representative and none of the rural areas had had any HIV education to speak of. The Government of Honduras
at that time were correctly aware that condoms were not the answer and wanted to stay away from them. I am certain the government
of Honduras is acutely aware of the parrameters of the Honduras HIV rural lands situation. The HIV rates of Honduras
are not much different than the nation of Guatemala bordering on the north and are about the same as the nation of Nigeria
Africa.
When I arrived in Tegucigalpa the capital of Honduras in late December 1998, sixty day following Hurricane Mitch
with the rebuilding in full progress, there was a problem. The women of the ancient honerable profession, who attend clinic near
the American Embassy in central Tegucigalpa regularly for venereal disease checkups and education were, president
Carlos Roberto Flores believed, in danger of becoming HIV infected. The reason for this was that the Tegucigalpa ward
of Belin was taking action to close down the Prostibulos. This shutdown had happened previously in the Honduras
city of San Pedro Sula where there was clinic and the rate of HIV infection had risen sharply in San Pedro Sula thereafter.
This was remedied by reopening the prostibulos.
What was meant by all this is that because HIV virus is a weak virus outside the body it is as a general rule not possible
for HIV virus to invade the body in heterosexual vaginal intercourse without present a venereal disease lesion (venereal
sore/sore or venereal tissue debility/debility) which provides the route for invasion. With the clinic available to Tegucigalpa
prostitutes, with prostibulos concomitantly not being uprooted, stability is provided as most attend clinic regularly expressing
satisfaction at having the clinic and not having to fear HIV. That is common venereal lesions are cured. HIV is
unable to invade. And there is socialization. The infection rate of HIV of prostitutes in Honduras is as high as seven
to eight percent in the big cities and three percent or less in the more rural cities. The clinic was doing much to prevent
any HIV infection .
It was problematic and President Flores spoke with the mayor of Tegucigalpa, Vilma Reyes Castellano, good friend
of President William Clinton, to see if she could interceed and sway Barrio Belin the other way. But
all was to no avail as Barrio Belin was resolute the prostibulos must go.
We have known since 1984 following a very professional study in part of prostitutes in West Africa and men
who frequent them, that the chances of a person becoming HIV infected increases 7,000 percent to 11,000 percent in heterosexual
vaginal intercourse with a venereal lesion present as a route permitting HIV to invade.
Clinics to check prostitute women for venereal disease are not unusual. The United States state of Nevada has clinic
for women who work in the bordellos and clinic is mandatory. Clinic in Tegucigalpa is not mandatory but the women
to reiterate enjoy the socializing and care, and nearly all were attending. Tegucigalpa had recently gotten control
on the HIV problem suddenly to have its program to counter HIV infection shaken up by the move in Barrio Belin
to close down prostibulos in the Barrio. (All the prostibulos were located in Barrio Belin).
The overall rate of HIV in Honduras is not high. Honduras is basically a rural country and HIV infection in the rural
areas is minimal. Overall there is less HIV in Honduras than in the United States. And neither are high HIV rate nations.
Honduras has the advantage over the United States that it is ninety percent catholic, with marriage at an earlier age and
little divorce and its newspapers are very conservative and do not carry the sexual revolution. Yet Honduras did not
escape the sexual revolution.
The Honduras Ministry of Health, after a temporary absence of their librarian, reopened the Public Health Libriary located
within the Ministry complex itself located downtown next to the Post Office. There reading I
learned that in l985 there was very little HIV in Honduras. Had it not become an issue in the United States by that year, Honduras
would not have known about HIV. The Honduras HIV Study of that year 1985 shows a very low level of HIV infection
in the nation and the known HIV infections can not be connected to any high percentage with sex.
Yet the sexual revolution was at that time on its way to Honduras and within a half decade most HIV cases were sex
connected and the rate of HIV was no longer low. Or that is, HIV has always been in Honduras but not connected with
sex spread particularly more than the many other ways it spreads still remaining at a low level, and which had
been too low a level to recognize. However within a half decade following 1985 the sexual revolution was in full
swing in Honduras and in the relative sense with a very high rise in the HIV rate and as a percentage most
HIV infection now was sex related. James Franklin Lawton
